✝️ Scripture

There is truly no better way to grasp the divinity of Christ and Triunity of God than by meeting Him personally in the pages of Scripture. When we read the Gospels and the witness of the apostles, we are not just gathering arguments—we are encountering the living Lord who reveals Himself as one with the Father and the Spirit. That encounter forms our minds and hearts far more deeply than any theology textbook or debate ever could.

However, as a way to support that encounter, we’ve gathered a number of carefully chosen resources below. There are countless excellent works on the Trinity, but these have been selected for their clarity, faithfulness, and usefulness. They’re grouped by type to help you find what’s most accessible.

If you have other materials you’re reading or considering, we’d be glad to offer feedback or reflections on them as well—we’re always eager to walk alongside you as we grow together in knowing our Lord and Saviour.

📚 Books

Robert M. Bowman Jr. & J. Ed Komoszewski – The Incarnate Christ and His Critics (2023)

This is a comprehensive yet accessible ‘one stop shop’ response to many modern and ancient challenges to Jesus’ deity. This comes as an update and expansion of a highly acclaimed previous work of theirs (Putting Jesus in His Place), and Bowman and Komoszewski are phenomenal popularisers of many technical works of theology. It is a deeply scriptural systematic refutation of many common arguments raised by Muslims, Biblical Unitarians, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and others who deny the Trinity.

We highly recommended this book for its comprehensiveness and accessibility.

Scott R. Swain – The Trinity: An Introduction (2020)

This is a short, clear, and beautiful primer on the Christian doctrine of God. At about 100 pages, Swain distils the church’s historic understanding of the Trinity in a biblically grounded, theologically rich, and devotionally warm kind of way.

This is a perfect read for those wanting a brief but faithful explanation of how Christians can confess one God in three persons. A great first step into deeper study.

Michael Reeves – Delighting in the Trinity: An Introduction to the Christian Faith (2012)

This is a joyful, beautifully written introduction to why the Trinity is good news. Reeves writes with warmth, clarity, and worshipful tone, and this is ideal for anyone who finds theology intimidating. It’s short, engaging, and life-giving—often the book that “turns the lights on” for those who see the Trinity as academic and unimportant.

Fred Sanders – The Deep Things of God: How the Trinity Changes Everything (2010)

This is a worshipful exploration of why the Trinity isn’t abstract navel gazing ‘theology’—it is the heartbeat of the gospel. Sanders does a masterful job connecting the doctrine of the Trinity to prayer, salvation, and daily Christian life. He shows that the gospel itself is Trinitarian from beginning to end.

It is a substantive read, but quite accessible for people wanting to move beyond simply understanding the Trinity to why we should. If you already have Swain for clarity and Reeves for heart, Sanders gives worshipful depth to both!

Richard Bauckham – Jesus and the God of Israel: God Crucified and Other Studies on the New Testament’s Christology of Divine Identity (2008)

This is a scholarly but important demonstration that the New Testament writers included Jesus within the identity of Israel’s one God (YHWH). Bauckham dismantles the claim that belief in Jesus’ deity was a late invention and he shows it is embedded from the very start in Jewish monotheism.

This is much more academic, but immensely strengthening for those who want to see how the earliest Christians understood Jesus as fully divine within the Shema itself (Deut. 6:4; 1 Cor. 8:6).
